Position Objective: An FLRSD custodian ensures a clean, safe, and well-maintained learning environment that supports the health, safety, and success of students, staff, and the school community. This position is responsible for the daily cleaning and upkeep of school facilities, performing routine maintenance, and supporting the smooth operation of the building in alignment with district policies, safety regulations, and Massachusetts public school standards. An FLRSD Custodian plays a vital role in fostering pride in the school environment by maintaining facilities that reflect high standards of cleanliness, safety, and care. Responsibilities: Performs general, routine custodial duties, including dusting, mopping, vacuuming, cleaning restrooms, and restocking paper and soap supplies Performs routine maintenance of custodial equipment and supplies Empties trash receptacles, disposes trash into compactors and/or dumpsters, and bags trash for proper disposal Unlocks doors, ensuring doors are locked after cleaning areas Reports need and concerns to appropriate staff, which may include submitting or recommending work orders and checking supply levels Ensures proper care in the use and maintenance of equipment and supplies; promotes continuous improvement of workplace safety and environmental practices Assists in on-the-job training of new staff on routine procedures Performs cleaning functions specific to the assigned facilities and/or based on seasonal/project requirements Assists with the setup and breakdown of meetings, graduation, and other school and town functions May provide vendors with access to areas for facility needs and may answer basic questions. May report issues with vendors to the supervisor May assist or perform snow removal activities and minor maintenance, such as replacing light bulbs, adjusting furniture, or other similar activities Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned Performs Groundskeeping duties as requested including but not limited to grass cutting, weeding, removing litter, and assisting the grounds department as needed Serves as a first responder in buildings and grounds emergencies and is able to work overtime on an as-needed basis Assists in setting up and breaking down events including but not limited to graduations, town meetings, athletic events or any other district event/assembly Completes other tasks as assigned by the Lead Custodian or Director of Facilities/designee The statement of responsibilities listed above is general in nature as to the duties that are expected to be carried out by the custodian. Other job-related assignments may be required on an as-needed basis throughout the Regional School District. The position description applies to district-wide custodial staff. Required Qualifications and Conditions: High school diploma or GED equivalency certificate Completed degree (s) from an accredited institution that are above the minimum education requirements may be substituted for experience on a year-for-year basis Must pass a pre-employment criminal background check Valid Massachusetts driver's license Citizenship, residency, or work visa in the United States is required Necessary Skills: Ability to understand written and verbal instructions and communication Ability to read, understand, follow, and enforce safety procedures Ability to operate vacuums and other related equipment Ability to safely use cleaning equipment and supplies Ability to use hand and power tools applicable to trade Ability to lift and manipulate heavy objects - up to 50 lbs Working Conditions and Physical Effort: Considerable physical activity. Requires medium to heavy physical work; heavy lifting, pushing, or pulling required of objects up to 50 pounds and occasionally lifting and/or moving objects up to 150 pounds with assistance from co-workers Standing for long periods of time Ability to work comfortably from a ladder Must be able to complete tasks that may require bending, twisting, climbing, squatting, crouching and balancing The work environment involves some exposure to hazards or physical risks, which require following basic safety precautions Work may involve moderate exposure to unusual elements, such as extreme temperatures, dirt, dust, fumes, smoke, unpleasant odors, and/or loud noises Salary & Terms of Employment: The pay scale is based on AFSCME Council 93 Local 1700 Freetown-Lakeville Regional School District Maintenance Salary Schedule.
