Job Title: Director, Fate and Metabolism

Department: Environmental Fate and Metabolism
Reports To: Vice President, North American Operations
Location: Wareham, MA
Compensation: Targeting $175,000 up to $200,000 base salary + 15% Incentive Bonus + 401K + Benefits + PTO
FLSA Status: Exempt

Position Summary:

The Director of Fate and Metabolism is responsible for leading and managing scientific studies and teams focused on environmental fate, metabolism, and degradation of chemicals in various environmental matrices and biological systems. This role oversees study design, execution, interpretation, and regulatory reporting in support of global registration dossiers (e.g., EPA, EFSA, PMRA). The Director ensures high scientific standards, regulatory compliance, client satisfaction, and operational excellence. The Director is accountable for developing and meeting annual operating plans and budgets.

Key Responsibilities:

Scientific Leadership

  • Oversee and provide technical guidance for studies including:
    • Environmental fate (soil/water degradation, adsorption/desorption, photolysis)
    • Plant and animal metabolism
    • Biotransformation and kinetics
    • Residue analysis and mass balance
  • Ensure appropriate study design, method development, and data interpretation consistent with regulatory expectations (e.g., OECD, EPA, GLP).
Study Oversight and Compliance
  • Ability to act as Principal Investigator or Study Director on key regulatory studies, as needed.
  • Ensure studies meet GLP compliance and internal quality standards.
  • Review and approve protocols, reports, and data summaries.
People and Project Management
  • Lead and mentor a multidisciplinary team of scientists and technical staff.
  • Provide performance feedback, career development, and training plans.
  • Allocate team resources and manage timelines and budgets for multiple concurrent studies.
Client & Stakeholder Engagement
  • Serve as the scientific point of contact for sponsors and regulatory agencies.
  • Communicate study progress, technical details, and regulatory implications clearly and professionally.
  • Support business development efforts by participating in client calls/visits, proposal reviews, and technical presentations.
Innovation and Process Improvement
  • Stay current with emerging science, regulatory changes, and new analytical techniques.
  • Drive innovation in study design, analytical methods, and data reporting systems.
  • Implement process improvements to enhance study efficiency and data quality.
Financial
  • Develop and meet annual operating plans and budgets.
  • Build cost structure to support revenue projections while meeting expected profitability.
  • Take commercial mindset about expending business while managing downsides and risks.
Qualifications:

Education:
  • Graduate degree in appropriate science field (or equivalent experience) plus substantial experience in an area of related expertise.
Experience:
  • Appropriate depth and breadth relevant technical experience, including in a leadership or management role.
  • Proven experience with GLP requirements.
Skills & Competencies:
  • Deep understanding of chemical behavior in environmental and biological systems.
  • Technical skills in regulated studies.
  • Strong analytical method knowledge, particularly LC-MS/MS, radioisotope tracing, and metabolite identification.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects, teams, and priorities simultaneously.
  • Collaborative leadership style with a focus on mentorship and scientific integrity.
Working Conditions
  • Domestic and international travel as required.
  • Predominantly onsite, based at Wareham site.
  • Travel requirements expected: Client visits, Conferences, Company meetings, and Sales visits.
  • Additional hours and weekend work as required.
  • Work with potentially hazardous substances and radiolabeled samples.
Preferred:
  • Experience in a CRO or regulatory consultancy environment.
