About Commonwealth Fusion Systems:
Commonwealth Fusion Systems is on a mission to deliver the urgent transition to fusion energy.
Combining decades of research, top talent, and new technologies, we're designing and building commercially viable fusion power plants. We work with policymakers and suppliers to build the energy industry of the future.
Since 2018, we've raised over $2 billion in capital – more than any other fusion energy company in the U.S.
We're looking for thinkers, doers, builders, and makers to join us. People who bring new perspectives, solve tough problems, and thrive as part of a team.
If this describes you and this role fits, we want to hear from you.
Join the power movement as a Manager, Remote Maintenance
CFS is designing ARC as the world's first commercial fusion power plant, aiming to provide reliable and clean fusion energy to the grid. Due to device activation and uptime needs, ARC requires periodic, fast, and reliable remote maintenance, involving robotics, remote handling equipment (RHE), plant layout, manufacturing, and tokamak design. The Remote Maintenance System is crucial for realizing CFS's mission.
The Remote Maintenance team designs ARC's Remote Maintenance System. As the group manager, you will lead a team of engineers, setting the high-level architecture for ARC's maintenance scheme and owning the Remote Maintenance Program focused on technology maturation. You will collaborate with other teams to rapidly advance ARC design, including physics, neutronics, thermo-fluids, structures, maintenance, manufacturing, assembly, techno-economics, and more.
Key Responsibilities:
- Mentor, coordinate, and manage a team of remote maintenance engineers.
- Uphold CFS's cultural values of integrity, impact, self-critique, and execution while supporting team growth.
- Develop the architecture and strategy for CFS's remote maintenance program and design playbook.
- Design radiation-hardened remote handling equipment (RHE) using robotic technologies, custom hardware, and heavy lift equipment.
- Assess maintenance needs of the tokamak and plant to inform ARC's design for remote maintenance.
- Collaborate across disciplines to solve complex problems.
- Identify R&D needs for the ARC remote maintenance program and plan R&D campaigns.
- Research existing and emerging remote handling solutions for application in ARC.
- Manage relationships with external RHE/robotics organizations and industry partners.
- Establish CFS's remote maintenance design guidelines.
- Manage team and program budgets, ensuring timely and cost-effective results.
- Lead with a safety-conscious mindset in all activities.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in Structural, Mechanical, or Aerospace Engineering.
- Minimum 8 years of experience in mechanical design, fabrication, testing, and operation of complex structures (fusion, fission, aerospace, marine).
- Experience with tokamak design and assembly strategies.
- Knowledge of actuation, guidance mechanisms, sensing, and structural mechanisms.
- Project management experience with cross-functional teams or external contractors.
- Proficiency in structural analysis (hand calculations and FEA, e.g., Ansys).
- Proficiency in CAD software (NX preferred).
- Effective communication skills within multidisciplinary teams.
- Safety-conscious approach.
Bonus Points:
- Experience in complex system pre-conceptual design involving multidisciplinary trade studies.
- Knowledge of fabrication methods like welding and machining.
- Understanding of materials for metals and composites.
- Self-driven and autonomous work style.
- Data-driven decision-making skills.
- Creativity and simplicity in design processes.
- Ability to thrive in fast-paced environments.
Must-Have Requirements:
- Ability to perform activities such as typing and sitting for extended periods.
- Commitment to safety to mitigate hazards like heat, cold, noise, fumes, magnets, lead, high voltage, and cryogenics.
- Willingness to travel and work nights/weekends as needed, with travel up to 15%.
Salary range: $100,000 - $200,000 per year, plus equity and benefits. Actual salary depends on qualifications, experience, and location.
Benefits include:
- Competitive compensation with equity
- 12.5 company-wide holidays
- Flexible vacation and sick days
- Parental leave policy
- Health, dental, vision insurance
- 401(k) with employer match
- Professional growth opportunities
- Team-building activities
